About This Country

In regards to bird tourism, Bolivia is perhaps one of the least developed countries in South America. However, it is quickly becoming a premier birding destination and rightfully so. Bolivia has the most birds of any landlocked country in the world, and boasts a good number of endemic species. It is also the best country to see macaws; with twelve species, Bolivia has the highest diversity of macaws globally (for comparison, Costa Rica has three).

From the expansive lowland savannas of the Beni to the high altitude Polylepis forests of the Andes, there are multiple habitat types to explore. Contacting the conservation group Asociación Armonía is a good place to start in gathering information about a prospective trip. They not only own and help manage some of the best bird reserves in the country, but can help you figure out who to work with on tour logistics.
