With more than 1,900 bird species, Colombia is the birdiest place in the world! No other country has more. It is also a relatively short flight from the United States and is a great starting point for South American birding.
One of the greatest pockets of endemism in the country is the Santa Marta Mountains in the north. They are the world’s highest coastal mountain range—not a northern offshoot of the Andes, but a separate and isolated range—and in fact the highest point in Colombia. There are 600 species of birds in this region, including 19 endemics.
There are many stellar conservation groups working hard to protect the country’s biodiversity. This includes ProAves, Calidris, Selva, and many more.
